Pleasant Valley Wildlife SanctuaryThere’s nothing quite like some time in the great outdoors to refresh and rejuvenate you. The Berkshires’ own Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary offers 1,000 acres of just such a cure – and it’s only 20 minutes from Federal House Inn!

A branch of Mass Audubon, Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in Lenox, MA features over 7 miles of trails through more than 1000 acres of wooded and wildlife-rich forests, meadows, and wetlands with many ponds and flowing streams.

Hiking trails at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary include a variety of challenge – from light to strenuous, so there is something for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels of ability and interest. There is even a universally accessible All Persons Trail with a boardwalk and deck overlooking an active beaver pond and featuring access to trail materials in large print, Braille, audio, and other tactile formats.

Maps of the trails can be downloaded from the Mass Audubon Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary website or collected at the sanctuary office upon arrival.

Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, as the name implies, is a wonderful place to spot wildlife in its natural habitat. Birdwatchers and photographers will be especially pleased with the number of birds that make the sanctuary their home. Geese, ducks, and several species of hawks use Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary as a breeding ground and wide array of migratory species can be found here at different times of the year.

The dams, dens, and lodges of these industrious creatures can be found throughout the sanctuary and quiet observers can even sometimes catch sight of the working on their dams!

Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary also offers programs and activities for visitors of all ages: guided canoe trips, wildlife demonstrations, guided hikes, gardening classes, and special events.
