The Federal House Inn is a wonderful place to relax while enjoying the sophistication of the historical atmosphere. It was built in 1824 by Thomas O. Hurlbut who built this gracious brick beauty with gorgeous wood floors and large windows that invite you to admire the scenery of the surrounding lawns. Located in the heart of the Berkshires, The Federal House Inn also has a handsome living room and a special breakfast room where you can peacefully enjoy your morning meal. All rooms are lavishly decorated with beautiful antiques that only add to the old colonial manor feel. The Inn is strategically located in an area with lots of historical and cultural events, making your experience at the Federal House one of entertainment and delight.

Hurlbut and his family moved to South Lee in 1822 with his friend, Charles Owen. Together they established the Owen and Hurlbut Paper Company. Their company quickly grew to become the most influential factor in the development of South Lee. The paper mill, which is operating to this day, still bears the Hurlbut name and can be seen from this beautiful Federal style Country Mansion which was built across the way from the paper mill.

The Federal House remained in the Hurlbut family until 1960. Since then, through various ownerships, this charming Federal-style brick home has been completely restored to the original country elegance of the Hurlbut Home. Now the charming country home is available for guests to visit the Berkshires, to appreciate the culture and history of the area, and to enjoy the warm hospitality of the Innkeepers, Barbara and Philip Broyles.

Barbara and Philip Broyles derive their greatest pleasure from hosting guests in their historic Country Inn.

Upon arrival you will be greeted warmly, your every need will be tended to. A recent guest from Baltimore said; “Many thanks for a wonderful stay. It was as if we were staying with particularly gracious friends, who happen to provide  marvelous food. We look forward to our next stay.”

Both Barbara and Philip have had successful careers in the financial industry. Their career now as innkeepers enables them to get to know fascinating people from many countries, cultures and walks of life. They awaken each morning saying: ”Wow! Aren’t we lucky to be innkeepers of the Federal House Inn.”
